Pushrod and Gasket Question
« on: September 15, 2012, 09:07:09 PM »
So I've installed a new Pushrod Grommet but it seems to still be leaking oil. I guess I didn't set this one in as well as the others. I have not yet started engine yet nor put in any oil. Can I still reset the grommet and use the current gaskets or do I need to replace the gaskets again...Currently the bike has new gaskets.

Thanks!

If it was me I'd try without replacing the gaskets. What's to lose ?

Alternatively do you have the type of pushrod tube where the stop ring is an interference fit on the tube rather than welded. ? In which case you can fabricate a tool to tap the ring down a little to seat the rubber. If it is a welded ring you can still try if it's sitting further out than the others but it will pull the tube out of the head a little. Cured a leak on mine using this tool.

It is also considered acceptable to put some gasket dressing on the PRT seals to help with their sealing when installing new ones

Thanks guys! I'll try to pull the heads off again and readjust them. ALso I'll try and put some gasket sealer on them just to help prevent leaks.

Be very careful with that tool. My Bike's PO had one and hammered the thing so badly to the point that the stop ring is already loose on the pushrod tube.

Note of caution: Not all Airheads have "hammer n' tool adjustable" push rod tube rings.

The rings on both my '81 and '83 are OEM welded in place.
