AGM Battery Source

I was looking for a replacement battery for my home security system and came across this .

I found a post on another forum from someone who had been using this model battery on an oilhead for 3 years with no problems. It also said the UB stands for universal Battery.

There are 2 basic groups of lead acid battery Standard flooded wet cells and Sealed Lead Acid sometimes called VRLA (valve Regulated Lead Acid).

Under the SLA group there are Gel cells and Absorbed Glass Mat

Gel cells have a thickener added to immobilize the electrolyte where as AGM's absorb the electrolyte in to the glass mat.

All the above is correct.

A simple test to determine if you have a SLA battery is to give it a shake. If it sloshes for a second afterwards, it has flooded cells. AGMs, and the now seldom seen Gel cells, will not slosh about. Use caution if you attempt this test.

The Radio Shack batter looks to be the same as the Staab.

The Staab battery is identical to the Radio Shack product right down to the printed copy on the battery case.

The Staab product description is confusing to say the least. Staab states it is an AGM but the battery is not marked as such. Staab also states the battery is a "...state-of-the-art lead-acid battery is the valve-regulated type" ...which is more common to an SLA battery.

I have had the Staab battery in both my R65s for several years and have nothing but praise for the product. I use Battery Tender Jrs religiously. R65 dot orgers usually get a discount on the Staab battery by mentioning your membership in this forum.

Granted, this post clarifies nothing about these two batteries. As Barry said, it just adds to the confusion. Note these batts are made in China. A good product, Grasshopper.
