MODIFIED BMW STAND
« on: July 27, 2012, 08:20:50 AM »
My 65ls is a 1982.

My stand had the foot stem broken on it so decided to purchase the new modified stand with better stem and foot pressure plate.

The only trouble is the new stand doesn't need the original stand connector lugs which swivel off the frame. I found you couldn't remove these either without taking the engine out or dropping it.

The supplied springs were too long as well as the original stand springs.

I couldn't find any springs of the shelf so had some made by a company called Vincent Springs (Uk). I sent them the original stand spring for tension, thickness of wire, diameter and length of leg. The overall length of the spring is 70mm. The distance it needs to fit on the bike is 85mm. Cost £6 including postage.

Only got them in the post this morning (see pic showing original spring and new shorter spring). Will fit them over weekend and let you know  how I got on.

The shackles are easily cut away with a pair of aviation snips. A little snip and then pliers to work the thin metal until it fails. Off they come.

Had the same issue on my '81 when I replaced the hernia-inducing, boot-busting, ball-ended centerstand with a later model I scored off eBay. I sourced the required springs from a local hardware store. Perfect fit and low price.

Those are some HONKIN' BIG SPRINGS!  [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

Did you add an up stop for the new style center stand to the frame ?

The old style used the rubber plugs in the ends of the center stand tubes to use as an up stop .

The newer style has a small sheet metal bracket with a rubber plug as the up stop .

The new stand hits the bottom of the exhaust as the stop. The flat foot peg acts as the stop.

The new springs fit all ok and give the right tension.

This stand is much better than the original stand, it has that flat foot area on the stand end and pivots easier as you push it.

Also the back tyre is off the ground and the bike is level.
