LED Tail light hack
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:49:37 AM »
Just after getting the suggestion to replace my lights with LEDs to lower the draw, I saw this online: http://petemills.blogspot.ca/2012/04/tenty-led-brake-lights.html

it is unfortunate how far away this is on my project list.

Mororrad Elektrik has their own version of this called Beacon 2, I know it works on the twin shock bikes, looks like it will work on a mono shock bike as well .

I've got two of them in use, a good upgrade if you do any amount of night riding .

That's an impressive brake light both the end result and the quality of engineering involved in it's development. Pretty sure it wouldn't be legal here in the UK but I'm going to save that link and think about building something similar.

I thought so too! Wasn't it clever how he mounted the board using the original socket with an epoxied stud?

Just installed the Beacon in the R65 yesterday a friend gave me in return for some work.  Very nice quality piece and installation took only minutes.  Thinking of getting one for the /7. Bright!

Yes, I also have the Beacon 2 in my R65LS, and I may get a Beacon for the R100 soon.   I'd build one myself, but for the time & materials it takes to make a good rugged unit like the Beacon I'd just as soon support Rick and spend my time on other things.   It is extremely easy to install on an R65 and is also easy to reverse to stock if you want, but I don't see why anyone would want to as it is much brighter and safer.

Does the Beacon2 brake light pulsate when the turn signals are on? I just installed the Stopper LED light bar to supplement the standards tail light and it is affected by the turn signals, probably because all the rear lights share 1 skinny ground wire. I guess when I feel like taking it apart again I will try a dedicated ground for the LED. In the mean time a pulsating brake light can't be a bad thing.

I've got the Beacon 2 LED replacement and the Stopper LED light bar and have no issues with the turn directions illuminating the light bar .

Check the connections, sounds like a compromised /corroded connection somewhere .

I also added the flashing LED Electro Pods that Motorrad Elektrik had for a while, they don't sell them anymore .

Definitely adds a bit more to the rear of the bike in visibility .

I have a Beacon 2 (no, it doesn't flash, but is a FINE product),
and Hyperlites to satisfy my flashing pleasures.

The Hyperlites come with a loop-wire that if left alone, the LEDs will flash constantly while the brakes are applied.
If you cut the loop, the LED's will flash about 5 times (I forget the number) and then go steady until you release the brake.  If I want to repeat the flash sequence, I release the brake and reapply it.
They are two small pods of 8 LEDs each.  I fastened one to each of the turn signal bodies.

That guy in the OP really knows his stuff, though!

HI Gang
I put the modulating tail blazer bulb on my R65LS & it works well.
Kisan technologies sells them - I find it reassuring when hitting the brakes in traffic that the bulb flashes before remaining solid on - here's a link

Agree Rick sells good products!

Unless Rick is out of town, you can normally use the phone number on the website .

If he is gone, he'll usually leave a message that no orders will be processed until he gets back and usually gives a time frame for his return .

If he's busy with another customer and you leave a message, he usually calls back within an hour or so .
