Krauser Rear Rack for my '79 R65
« on: April 29, 2012, 09:15:27 PM »
Hi,

I stumbled upon one R bike in the shop at Anderwerks for maintenance which had a Krauser rear rack.  Sent an email to Re-Psycle BMW Parts shop and ordered a set:

and sides are interchangeable with the same part number:

I'm having a hard time deciding whether to paint the remaining parts black, or have them all bare aluminium and clear coated.......

:^)

The only way we can decide for you, is for you to purchase an expensive, fancy camera, take a ton of close ups and distance shots of the bike both with and without the racks on and show us what you're working with.

I mean, we might be looking at repainting the whole bike to match the racks!

'04 R1150 RT ~41000 miles
'86 R65 / '84 motor ~72000 miles. SS lines, Spiegler rotor, Progressive monoshock, Keihan silencers, a piece of Pichler fairing.
'76 CB400F ~26000 miles. non-runner!

Well, you posted a photo so now you get my opinion: I'd go with black.  If it were a stainless steel type silver, I'd go with that, but aluminum color doesn't match the exhaust, or other shiny bits.

This is important for when you have the case off but don't take the frame off.. you want the parts to look similar.  IMHO.

Also, your engine is sparkly clean.. how many toothbrushes did that take?

Black it shall be; I haven't stockpiled enough toothbrushes yet, I've only ridden less than 2,000 km's when I bought the bike last year.

What's wrong with these pictures?

Can't open the seat, the rear rack is in the way  :-[

But, there is a way around the miss-fit  :o

Move the rack to the last pair of bolt holes....

And, manufacture a bracket that will connect to the rear rack and the bolt holes on the pannier frame  ;)

Krauser *used* to have a rack that looked like yours from teh side, but which actually did pivot on the support arms so it would swing further out to the rear to allow one ot open the seat, and then swing forward againand latch for riding.   The support arms have the same basic appearance from several feet away, but those are obviously rigid, and not a "swinging parallelogram".  Hmmm.  Well, they look cool anyhow!

Wow Mike, I don't remember seeing that one.
Reynolds made a pivoting rack for the 1st gen R65 (I had one for a long time).
I'm not sure, but I think maybe the rack for the 2nd gen bikes (from Reynolds) did not need to pivot.

That sure is beautiful paint on your '79 2dogs!  Be careful not to scratch it.

It is a very nice rack & holders, but I think you would be better off buying my OEM luggage holders & tail rack.
I will admit that the aftermarket racks are more useful than the smaller OEM.  I think BMW did it that way on purpose so you wouldn't put too much weight back there.

Max BMW wants $349 for all three pieces.  I will sell them for $250 +shipping.  They only have 300 miles on them.
In case you are interested.  :)

Oops, you are right, Rob - I got my manufacturers mixed up - it was Reynolds and not Krauser - I've been getting a number of things criss-crossed lately! :D

Hey, 2dogs1cat, any chance you might be interested in selling the bag mounts and rack if you purchased the OEM set from Rob?  CAPTMDC

Yes, I would be selling the bag mounts, rear rack, turn signal stalks, and the Krauser turn signal mounts that have been removed to accommodate the rear rack.
