Later-model centerstand on a '79 frame?
« on: May 13, 2012, 04:16:54 AM »
Have you done it?  If so, what bits/modifications were needed?

I have the later centerstand, ready to go on.  And I am going to be swapping out engines soon, so that would be a good time to make the change, when the bike is light!

Thanks.

The later center stand uses a sheet metal bracket welded to the frame with a rubber part as the up stop, it doesn't use the plugs in the end of the tubes as a stop .

I'll try and get a picture today, it's nothing more than a small length of 90 degree angle iron about an inch or so long welded to the lower left frame tube .

The rubber stop is the least of my worries.

It is the springs (length & orientation of hooks) that I am concerned about.

Well, the project is coming along.
My good friend Stephen Bottcher stopped in town for the night on his way home with a 1992 R100 in the back of his truck.
So with Stephen's help, I got the short-block removed from the frame, and then we propped up the rear of the frame and took off the center stand.
I pulled out the new replacement stand (used) and it fit right in place, although it seems to be a little taller than the other stand.
Does this additional height have anything to do with the [supposed] easier-to-heft 2nd generation bikes, do you think?

But with that R100 sitting in Stephen's truck, I was able to get some good pictures of where a "proper" bump-stop should go (sorry Bob, I am a visual person).

It may not be the same on the short framed bikes, though.

And here is my first real issue:

Both sides are the same:

Stephen didn't think anything was wrong because we were able to torque them down and there is no lateral movement.  Just the same - it wasn't that way with my old stand.  And I got to thinking about it, and went out to the truck to check out the R100.  Sure enough:

But the engine won't be arriving for another week or more, so I have plenty of time to figure it out.

There are two to choose from,:
16      Bush      11MM       2                  46 52 1 236 528      $3.64
16      Bush      13,5MM      2                  46 52 2 301 704      $3.86

The 11mm bushing is the only one listed in my hardcopy Aux. Catalog, which was published before the '81 models came out.  And it lists the same part # 236 528.

I don't see how a 13.5mm bushing is going to solve my problem.  I need shorter ones - or to find out if/where the problem truly exists.

Tomorrow I will measure the thickness of the tops of the stands.

Thanks guys.

Rob

I would have thought that a taller stand would make it harder to lift. What made my stand easier to use on my 79 was not going so far over centre after the stops were built up with weld. The later stand is probably easier still if it has the proper pedal to push down on.

It would be nice to have a proper stop like that welded to the frame. You've got me thinking if I could make something to clamp around the frame tube.

The bushes on my 79 look much like the R100 pic. The bush is clamped hard to the frame mount and the stand rotates around it. There is some lateral play but nothing like as much as your 2nd and 3rd pics.

Thanks Barry (did you fit a later stand to your bike?).

There is very little lateral play as it is now, simply because the center stand arms sit out-board of the large tabs on the frame.

Yep - it's a "proper" center-stand...;)

But this is my weekend, so I am going to take it apart and see what is really going on inside there.

No just repaired the original. I should have welded a foot pad on while I was at it.
