Maybe RMS replace?

So I've been getting this squeal noise identical to this YouTube video:

I've read in a thread a few months back that it was the throwout bearing.  Got one on order and hope that thats the culprit.  The clutch has been acting a bit funny lately as well, as if just a slight amount of lever pull will disengage the clutch completely, then the clutch gets 'grabby' as you release the lever.  

If not, the next thing im going to check is the RMS...theres some oil under there.  I've read a few really good articles about it but it still freaks me out.  

So as long as I don't allow the crankshaft to push forward and drop the pin in my engine case, i'll be ok, right?

When I had my through out bearing go out on my 75 R90 I did not hear and noise that sounded like that or and abnormal sounds. I was only able to tell buy the way the pull of the clutch cable was.  If I would have know the the fill of the  clutch control about 300 miles earlier it would have save some money on repairs. The only sound that I have heard that is close is when I first got the R90 it had the round type breather valve and this make a Turkey sound changing to the new reed valve makes this stop. This may be some of what you are hearing.

Have you checked the clutch cable for proper adjustment, for the disengagement and re-engagement problems you are having ?

Is the ctuch cable hanging up/possibly worn, maybe needing cleaning and lube ?

Has a transmission input spline lube been done in recent memory ?

Clutch adj is ok, but i'll go over it again.

Didn't see any hang ups, and unsure of the cleaning/lube part.  I'll definitely do this when I get home.  Don't know how old this cable is really - the PO to my knowledge didn't replace them.

Thats a good question.  I'm going to say no?  Would dryish splines give me a jerky clutch?  I've got the moly to lube the splines - perhaps I should do this soon.

Thats what I thought as well and on my last bike, a 90/6, I changed the valve to the new reed type and still got the turkey sound.  I'll tell you, the sound certainly seems to be coming from that breather valve area.  I'll check up on it and report back.  

Thanks for the ideas...Hopefully its nothing too bad.  I'll make sure to post what I find.

Josh,

As a prior Airhead owner, I'm sure you do recall that clutch cable adjustment must begin at the transmission end of the cable.

Confirm the liner material inside your clutch cable. If it is nylon, it should not be lubricated at all. Keeping the exposed ends clean is a good thing.

Dry input splines will cause all manner of odd, and often expensive, concerns. Pull the gear box for a spline clean and lube. Don't go overboard on the Moly application. With the box out, you'll be able to look for leakage at the rear main seal. This job qualifies as a "two-fer".

With the gear box out, it should be even easier to confirm the condition of the clutch cable. A three-fer?

I was able to get some stuff apart today and check up on the clutch shiftiness.  I also wanted to take a look at the oil breather valve and confirm that I indeed had a disc and not the new reed valve.  Confirmed.  It might be that that's what's making this intermittent lower-depths-sounding burpee gobble noise.  I read somewhere down the line that if you unscrew the dipstick while the engine is running and the noise disappears, its probably the rear main seal - yet I don't know how you could deduce that considering air pressure in the crankcase affects both the RMS and the oil breather valve.  But anyway, the noise doesn't go away.  Maybe it's the valve.  I guess I still can't post pics, but i've got a couple.

The clutch squeal ended up being the throwout bearing.  Cleaned and re-installed and no more noise.   ;D

Thanks monte for reminding me about the clutch--- I had forgotten about that adjustment screw on the lever arm.  Didn't quite have the time to do the spline lube, but its for sure in the near future. (I'll still consider that a three-fer cause I get to service the swing arm bearings)  

Turns out my air filter was slightly damp with oil all over...this may sound like a silly question but the filter itself says 'oil type', so is this normal for the filter?  Or is it just old and impregnated with oil vapor and needs replacing?  

Also is there a good reference on setting the gap and timing for an R65?  Perhaps one with pictures? Â
