Craig, I have a thread going right now titled
X-overectomy:
http://www.bmwr65.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1330297708Beside removing the two crossover pipes from the headers, I'm also doing a wrap job on the headers and adding Norton Peashooter mufflers. I would question how tidy a wrap job would be on the exhaust system with the crossovers tubes in place. I believe that could end up as an exercise in frustration, IMO.
Suggest you check the JEGS website for their header wrap products.
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/32062/10002/-1I purchased the 1"x50' roll for $19.99 + $4.99 ship and that will be plenty to do my headers with a bunch left over. Already have some SS tie wraps in the shop. Can't speak to the silicone spray product.
Scroll down the JEGS page link and read the
Usage and Overlap Guide as it provides the data needed to compute straight and curved pipe requirements.
Last item to share with you... The R65 has headers that are 35mm (approx 1 3/8") outside diameter. These relatively small diameter pipes need the one-inch wrap to achieve a nice, flat install as you make the big curve in the header's front end. The 2" wrap is
"not recommended" for the 35mm pipes.
