fluid capacities '79 R65

Just got the gearbox back in the frame and am going to replace fluids. Can anyone tell me the capacities of the gearbox, driveshaft and the final gear? Don't want to buy anymore fliud than I will need at least not at that price. Thanks Ray

I think it is slightly more than 1 quart, which means you have to buy two bottles to do the job - if I remember correctly.  Someone help me here.
You need a owners manual. See my sticky at the top of this maintenance section.  They are cheap.


The gearbox is easy.  You just fill it to the bottom of the threads for the fill plug.  Slightly below will not hurt.

The rear drive is similar.  To the bottom of the threads.

The drive shaft housing is the bugger.  You need one heck of a funnel.  I don't know how the rest of airhead-dom does it, but I have a big (1 pint?) oiler can that was in my dad's workshop probably before I was born.  I have tried searching the net for them, with no luck.  I'll take a picture tonight if I remember.  It is really neat.  It has a pneumatic thumb-operated pump, and a steel flexi-neck that is at least 12" long.  I just use my Ratio Rite to determine how many pumps is how many CC's.

Final drive on 79 is 250cc   (81 on is 350cc)

Better to use a measuring cylinder for each one, or at least final drive as it is easy to strip the small overflow bolt with repeated use.
I use a long very narrow funnel. It also helps when doing the drive shaft if you put a piece of 2 x 4 under the centrestand and tip bike onto the front wheel (without knocking it off stand   ). Doesn't seem to overflow quite as easy.

For gearbox I just lay bike on right rocker cover on an old tyre or  a piece of 4 x 4. You can then pour in your 800cc of oil as fast as you want, put in filler plug and stand it up

Good point Rob. Yes , I forgot the '79 we are talking about wouldn't have the overflow bolt.

To the bottom of the threads is correct..
Now I have a measuring cylinder, I just find it more convenient  to measure each fill.

I also occasionally use it too measure what I drain, just to keep an eye on what , if anything, is moving

I know the drive shaft is 150cc but if I put more than 100cc in it, it just migrates forward to the transmission.
