Rear wheel spindle?

Just replaced the rear tyre on my R65LS,spindle came out ok with a light tap,but getting it back in was a right pain in the @@@,why?greased it lightly,tappped it in but it would only go in so far then stuck!got it in after much bad words were said!!!tips and advice for the next time please.

Where did it stick ?

Not sure if the LS set up is exactly the same as other airheads but it's important that the spindle clamp on left leg of the swinging arm is not binding otherwise it can stress the leg out of alignment. Duane Ausherman's web site has a good picture of this but I can't seem to connect to it at the moment.

It went through the leg on the left no problem,it just wouldn't go through the drive all the way,i could feel the threaded part coming through with my finger but only a mallet and a fair bit of force sent it through,and the spindle isn't bent,i really didn't think it would be such a pain to re-install.

Loosen the four final drive mounting nuts just enough so the drive can wiggle around a little bit. Of course, leave the axle in place.

There's enough play in the mounting that if this wasn't done when the drive was initially installed, the axle will bind. Hopefully you won't need to remove the drive and replace the gasket - just try loosening them first. And those aren't special nuts, just 12 point rather than the usual 6 point fasteners. A normal six point box end wrench will work fine.

Are the shock absorber preload settings the same on each side ?

Another wild guess, as the center stand wears, the rear tire may not come off of the ground .

I have gotten into the habit of placing a thin piece of plywood down on the garage floor and then put the bike on the center stand on the plywood, gives an extra .5 inch /12 mm more clearance on the rear tire .

Yes i did this Bob,so it wasn't the height,anyway,it's all ok now,funny though,as i don't remeber having so much hassle with it last time i removed the rear wheel,must be a age thing!
