early R65 - front coil bracket

Am back working on my stripped down 1980 R65, and preparing the frame before a powder coat. The front coil bracket has always been missing, so I thought I would take the opportunity to neaten things up and get rid of the jubillee clips....So I have made a bracket similar to the rear bracket, and I am about to weld it on. Then I have thought, is there any thing that the coil might foul on - was the front bracket a particular shape, should it be parallel with frame, and what is the offset from the frame?  Rest of the bike is all boxed up, and I could get all the bits out and put it back together to find out, or I could ask here! Anyone got a picture of their front bracket please?

You need to put the fuel tank on, to see if there is any fitment problems with your new location for the coil bracket .

Not a lot of spare space under the tank .

Tank clearane is fine for my bracket. The electrics bracket with all the square holes in it which sits above the the coil also has to be cleared by the tank, so that much is OK. I think I was really wondering if the coil bracket has any downward crank in it to give clearance to the various boxes that sit above it.

I don't know about the bracket that you have made but the OEM brackets have a tendency to crack and break (at least that is my experience). This is caused by the vibration from the engine I believe.  So they need to be replaced from time to time.  If you weld it on and it breaks you will screw up your powder-coating if you replace it.  My advice would be to attach it using a screw so that you can replace it without messing up the powder-coating.

thanks for that - where did the original brackets crack? - where they  welded directly to the frame? On my frame, there are 2 small 'hangers' left from where any bracket was. Each foot of each hanger is welded to the frame, but not with very much weld. It looks like a bracket similar to the rear coil bracket was welded onto the two hangers, and that it has cracked off there. I am using 3mm rather than 2mm plate for my bracket to give a bit more strenght , but your screw idea is good. Would still like to know what the original looked like and where they typically failed. cheers
