side stand failure
« on: January 20, 2012, 11:57:43 AM »
Hi - My '79 r65 just suffered massive side stand failure - it wemt down pretty hard on some rocks it was parked next to. Luckily not too much damage.I need to replace a.s.a.p. & am wondering if the Brown sidestand is a good alternative?
Thanks, Bill

I don't have one but there are lots of positive comments around about the Brown side stand.

How exactly did your stand fail ?

It had been getting a bit loose... i'd propped it on a small rock to keep the bike more upright & while away it slipped off the rock. I guess the shock of that caused the ear on the top to bend & all the springs & pieces just blew off....bike fell! Have been quoted $129.00 for a Brown sidestand from boxerworks..any thoughts on that as a replacement?

I got the Brown sidestand from Boxerworks while they were at the RA rally at the Biltmore estate in Asheville, NC. Best purchase I have made for LRB in a long while! Get it...you will never regret the money!

I have had Brown side stands for almost as long as I have had my bikes.

I've never heard anybody having any issues with a Brown side stand .

Clamp it to the frame tube and pretty much forget about it !!!!

Thanks everyone - talked to Nathan at Boxerworks & he is checking to see if he has the one specific to our bikes & he seems to have the best price.

I like the brown sidestands. I have one installed. Way way better than the stock.

My only qualm is that the side stand hits my muffler. But maybe that's just me, my muffler isn't stock.

Mine hit the black muffler too until I had a bit of metal welded onto the stand to stop it moving that far.

I put a Surefoot on my R65.  Purchased from Motobins and delivered to my door for about the same price as the Brown (perhaps a bit less).  Two things about the Surefoot I liked better was the larger flat foot and the adjustable screw stop to keep it from hitting your muffler.  They are both a great improvement over the stock one.

I put a surefoot on mine after my side stand collapsed.  Still have not repaired the damage, but the new stand is great - and my R100 came with one fitted : )
