Bloody Hell! Now the odeometers on the blink!
« on: September 26, 2011, 04:07:56 AM »
Speedo still works, but the trip counter and odeometer have stopped working.

Gave the @!$^%$# thing a couple off taps which seemed to work temporarily but now its stopped.

I have to ride 250km home in less than 24hrs and i dont have my manual with me.

I'm concerned there maybe cogs/couplings destroying each other, and a new unit is not cheap, even from motorworks. :o

I have a good tool kit with, me please advise asap.

Cheers in advance.

The nylon cogs are a just a press fit on the shaft so it might only be that they are slipping. A tiny drop of super glue is said to cure that problem.

Not an uncommon occurrence with the odometer going gerfunken.

Could be dirty -1979 you say?- and there's really no harm in riding the bike. Might be a small gear slipping on its shaft. Speedo/odos can be repaired but it's usually best to send it off to a proper shop.

Is this the one with the reset knob on the back, or the push button on the front?

If it's on the front, sometimes they hang up, and the mechanism doesn't return so the gears again mesh.

If it's on the rear, it's probably like all the rest of the airheads that reset that way. And in that case, there's a gear that gets loose and then jams, or allows all the other number wheels to flop around. Bad stuff can happen - and this may well be happening with the style speedo with the button on the lens.

The best thing is to disconnect the speedo to prevent worse damage ocurring. It may only be the reset not returning - but I can't tell just by these symptoms.

Oops, after re-reading your post, I'd say the worst is happening because the odo also isn't working. I'm not positive, but think the odo still works when the trip meter hangs up.... I'll have to check that out.

Bollox! Just rode her home and read the new posts. its the one with reset on the back. I gently pryed front cover off + found everything working fine
EXCEPT! Yep! Odeometer gear ( turns numbers ), just spinning on its shaft. @*&#!!!!!!!!! I need to get the speedo needle off so i can take the face off,but im not certain how. Anyone know a way? Its looks like there may be a release underneath the needle??????? I'm aiming @ cleaning shaft + trying to epoxy the gear to it. Ideas / advice appreciated.

Decided to leave needle alone and work with assembly intact.

Cleaned shaft with cotton tips dipped in degreaser until tips didnt dirty on contact, dried with more tips.

Used Araldite lightly mounded from gear up the shaft.

Let it sit for a week just to be sure.

Worked like a charm.

Word of WARNING!

Needle is VERY DELICATE.

Only I can see it now that its been glued straight, but still be careful if your big clumsy fingers are near it.

Yep, be extremely careful around that needle! It's made from beer can aluminum. :)

The safest way to remove the needle is to use one of these miniature pullers.  I made one exactly like this 40 years ago during an Instrument apprenticeship but it got lost somewhere along the time line.

That's pretty cool, Barry. But it wouldn't work with our motometer gauges - the  shaft isn't accessable from the front. There's a hub and that's all that's visible.

But I sure can use one of those for an upcoming project. I've got a metric Mitutoyo depth gage and will be converting it to inches, which requires changing the dial and rack. Replacing the dial requires removing the needle. It's one of my new transmission shimming tools.

I fretted over my speedo and odometer for a year and a half.  The odometer stopped working in 1993.  I did not worry quorum it as I never planned on selling it and the trip meter worked well enough for tracking mileage for service and for trips.  However 3 years ago my speedometer needle started bouncing at speeds greater tha 45.  No worries as I could track my speed in town to avoid tickets,a at speed I would just ride with traffic as I do anyway as it is safer.  A year and a half ago the needle broke.  I finally got an Acewell.  Cheaper than replacing with a BMW unit, and probably more reliable, or at least not much worse.  The install was pretty slick, and it works great.

That's a good point. I suppose they are done like that for appearance sake. Still at least it would help to pull on the hub rather than the needle.

Right! Besides, pulling on the needle will only break it off! They're pretty delicate! The only way to remove is levering the hub.
