Messed up the bean can?
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:46:21 PM »
Now this was so so stupid.
finally received the gasket etc to put the timing cover on. SO i thought i would do it when i got home from work, eager to have the bike working ASAP. but also tired etc.

On attaching the timing cover the bean can didnt engage properly. so i decided to take it off as i  need to do the timing anyway plus i had spend ages tighting all those allen bolts. i then go about re attaching the  bean can. i think all is well.
Then i try to start the bike. front engine cover off.  i notice the bean can moving around!
when i remove it there was like a black ring of plastic that has come out of it. im assming a locating bush of some sort....
I have left it like that for the night as i would probably only cause more damage!

So what to do now? I suppose i am best to try it as it is.  would be nice to know what this pice of plastic was tho.

There is a large rubber o-ring that goes on the 'bean can', to prevent oil leakage from the engine .

The 'bean can' has ridges that mate up to a recessed slot in the camshaft sounds like you may not have gotten it on correctly, just a guess .

its not the oil O ring that goes around the can its the bit just below the engaging tabs  maybe this part?

 is it important?

and bob your totally correct it didnt line up to the camshaft corectly. im just worried about what the plastic bit that was mangled was.

Is it the middle one of the 3 washers ?

If it is I think that's part of the shaft "oil seal" and without it I suspect due to extra clearance oil will leak past the drive shaft into into your bean can.

The metal "coil" you show wraps around the shaft of the bean can, just below the two drive lugs. You'll see that there's a groove for it. The purpose of the coil is to keep the hardened pin in place that holds the drive lug component to the shaft.

You can see the metal coil in the series of photos that Lou, aka Zorro, posted for you.

Just kinda carefully wind the coil back into place. I've rebuilt several bean cans and with all of them, it's necessary to use a pin punch, hammer and vise to remove the pin. I can't imagine the pin coming out by itself... but you never know.

Slow down a little, Ben. Pay close attention as you dis-assemble; things will then go back together far easier.  ;)
