I am a cheapskate - Bings, exhaust header, ..

Where is the most affordable place to get parts for Bings? I'm a bit shocked that a rebuild kit is US$70 for what looks like not a lot of parts (http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=2688) and not including the ones that I want to replace (needles & needle jets). OK, I guess it can be had for $34 (http://secure.capitalcycle.com/OVERHAUL-KIT-BING-CARB-32-mm/productinfo/13+11+1+258+051) so I should quit complaining.....

Also I'm not looking forward to paying $200 for just the front 1/2 of the exhaust system. Anyone have a cheap suggestion if patching the holes doesn't work?

For Bing carb parts, you probably aren't going to do too much better than the prices you've seen .

The parts are pretty much specific to this use .

One word of caution, there have been reports here by members, that non-Bing diaphragms can cause problems, by not being as pliable as the Bings, they are a thicker material and this is one of those cases that stronger, thicker is not a step in the correct direction .

MAC is about the only cost effective replacements for the header pipes, don't know anything about them, but some members here have installed them, can't remember if they had any fitment issues with them or not .

MACs, at least on the larger twins, are dual wall construction (BMW is single wall and that's why they turn blue) which makes them heavier and constricts the flow a little. They also didn't bend them the same so they look different, though probably work just fine.

One of the cheaper places to find bing parts is the BMW dealer, amazingly. Who'da figured?

Usually a complete rebuild kit isn't needed, just some o-rings or like in your case, needles and needle jets. I've never bought a complete rebuild kit yet and have been riding and fixing my own beemers for 22 years now.

Make your own headers, I did.
Exhaust shops have preformed bends in the same diameter tubing. I took my rusty old headers in and matched the curves I needed.
I worked out that a 180 degree bend worked for one side and the other had a tighter radius so it needed 2/90 degree bends welded together. Get them to put a small bend on the end of some straight pipes for where they bend up to the mufflers.
Weld them together so that they are as close as the original pipes as you can get.
I didn't bother with the troublesome balance pipes. My bike has been running okay with these headers for at least 20 years.
I painted them for a few years then I got them chrome plated.

Like the Hunsta, I'm a fan of Motobins. When the Bings on the '81 were overhauled, I bought all the bits from Motobins EXCEPT the diaphragms which are OEM Bing parts.

After rebuild, tune and balance, I haven't had to touch them.
