Speedometer Replacement Gears

My speedo died on me and after some inspection, I come to find out that the spiral nylon gears that connect the speedo cable to the speedometer are no longer meshing.

I have come across a couple websites that sell the straight cut gears but not these spiral cut ones.

Has anyone replaced these before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you have a 'donor' speedometer to rob parts from, the parts are not available .

Like Rob says - they're not available. And the shops that can/do fix our speedos generally won't sell parts - and I understand why, since they have to rob them from their junkyard, which could leave them without the parts to rebuild another one.

Also, what I've seen is those gears tend to go when there's high resistance somewhere in the speedo - it could be old stiff grease or the odometer is jamming up. Something like that. So once those gears are replaced, make sure the rest of the speedo is serviced!

What effect did the broken gear had on the speedo?

I'm curious, my speedo is working fine, but the odometer had stopped working, turning the reset knob does nothing. I haven't found the problem yet since I am reluctant to open the speedo housing.

Julio, the gears that are sheared on mine are the ones that connect the cable to the speedo, so in my case none of the gauge works now. I do not have the speedo with me at the moment but I will take some pictures of the gears that turn the odometer and post them by the end of the weekend.

Julio don't be afraid to get into your speedo and get that odometer working again. If I can do it you can too!  When inside the speedo you will quickly see what's wrong I think. Probably a slipping gear wheel that can be glued. Also when removing the speedo mph needle use 2 jeweller's screwdrivers and make sure it "clicks" back on its spindle when getting it back on. It can bounce off later! And mark where the speedo needle was in its resting position before you take it off....use a permanent marker or better still a wee scratch mark.
There is an article on how to do all this somewhere...google it. At airheads.org pretty sure. Could time to clean and lube in there anyway. There is a bezel around the speedo that needs to be pried off carefully and is reusable. I ended up wrapping the bezel with duct tape when I finally put it all back together and put some black silicone under the rubber too to ensure waterproofness.

The only way in is through the front. It's a bucket with the bezel retaining the lens.

wirespokes is right, you have to take the bezel off. It's like a mason jar, the glass is the lid and the bezel is holding the everything together. The only difference is that the bezel on the speedo is crimped on rather than screwed on.

If you take your time and just work your way around the lip of the bezel on the back side lightly prying it up, you can get it off with out tearing the bezel up.

Julio, I have attached a couple more pictures that show more of the guts of the speedo. There's a nylon screw that is perpendicular from the main shaft that turns the mechanism for the odometer. It's possible there's something up with that on yours.

Ok so I'm ready to open the speedometer and find out why the odometer doesnt work and clean it up as both intruments get fogged up.  I am not so worried about the removal, but how to place it back.  How is the bezel reattached after prying it open?.  Do you have to compress it somehow with a large hose clamp?

fermin, you should be able to get the bezel back on flush with the base and then work your way around the edge bending down the edge of the bezel over the lip of the base. Basically in reverse order of the way you took it off.
