Center Stand Repair

I have a 1980 R65 and the center stand is not working properly.   When I pull it up onto the stand it keeps on going backwards and the stand winds up against the oil pan.

I removed the stand and can't see any stops that are broken off.  I assume the metal at the top of the stand have worn to the point that they are not catching.

If this is the case is a possible repair having a welder add a couple of beads to build up the top of the tops?

The rubber tips at the ends of the center stand tubes are the stops for the center stand, they contact  a frame tube .

You may want to check the two bolts that the center stand pivots on, check them for tightness, not uncommon to have them loosen up .

Yes that's the usual repair although it sounds like the stand tips might be missing the frame stops altogether.  As Bob suggests I would check the pivot bolts for tightness.

If you do need a stand repair welding is the easy bit. Count on spending quite some time trial fitting and grinding any excess weld of the stand tips to get the fit correct both sides and angle correct. If you add too much weld the bike will be unstable on the stand and may easily roll off. Mine was about right when the bike was very lightly balanced on the front wheel but could be made to rest on the rear wheel with the pressure of 1 finger on the seat. Balance will depend on weight distribution from fuel load and luggage etc. The end result will be a compromise between stability and ease of use. I suspect BMW may have overly favoured stability and had the bike resting fairly heavily on the rear wheel when new.

Looks like the previous owner had let the bolts get too loose and once I tightened them up it work fine, however, I did see some wear of the upper part of the stand so I will keep an eye on them.

I have also had those pivot bushing (on my '81 R100) crack into several pieces.

When the bolts are loose wear tends to occur in the centre hole and countersink of the bush. The outside of the bush which is meant to be the bearing surface doesn't wear too badly if they are cleaned and greased once a year and the bolts are kept tight.
