replacement of the alternator rotor
« on: November 05, 2011, 03:44:54 PM »
I have been struggling with the replacement of the alternator rotor in my '81 R65.  Since the original died, I have tried to install 3 others, none of which have fit properly.  The problem is excessive length, not diameter.  Side by side, the original is  approximately 1 -4 millimeters shorter than the replacements.  Rick Jones has been very helpful and patient, even going so far as to install rotor #3 in his own bike with no problem.  After carefully installing that one in my bike this a.m., I am still unable to turn over the engine.  I'm stumped.

Does that mean that there is "binding in the alternator parts keeping the motor from turning over? or does it mean there is no Battery to the starter and it won't turn over?

Red Bike, why don't you start a separate thread on your problem, it's kinda 'buried' here .

If you can post a few pictures, it may be helpful, you've got an uncommon issue there .

One millimeter is about .040". Four mullimeters is about an eighth of an inch. I have a difficult time understanding where that minimal extra length could cause a problem.

Was anything else changed?
