Parts compatibility

Does anyone know if the transmission and final drive from and LS will fit on a standard R65?

I THINK from what I have read that the tranie will work, but I'm not convinced about the final drive is as compaitible see as it is that the rear brakes and wheel are differenet between the two bikes.

Is this correct??

Thanks!

The transmission and final drives are the same for bikes made after 09/80,  the secind generation R65 .

The only reason the brake shoes are different on the LS, is because the drum on the LS is a larger diameter .

An LS rear wheel will work on a standard R65, as long as the correct brake shoes are used .

So Bob, you are saying he can use the LS final drive with a non-LS wheel, as long as he uses non-LS brake shoes?

Yes, there are no differences in the final drives themselves .

Transmissions are all the same, final drives are all the same (except for ratios, and disc/drum brakes), and wheels can be swapped from one to the other. As was already said, only difference is the brake shoes - the LS takes larger diameter shoes than all the rest of the beemers.

Thank you for the very helpful information guys.  I finally finished stripping down that parts LS bike I have, and was trying to decide what to do with what.

As these bikes age, parts are getting harder and harder to find, and I don't think getting rid of a perfectly good trany and final drive is a good idea if I can help it.  Then again, I'd probaly get decent bucks for both...  ;)

Thanks!

ALWAYS keep a spare transmission if you already have a good, working one!

And if you plan on taking any extended trips, you might consider pre-packaging it and leaving it with friends that could ship it it to you if need be.

Rob gives excellent advice. The transmission is one of the weak links, and a spare is excellent insurance against trailering the bike home from a tour or missing a sizeable amount of the riding season. Make sure it's in good condition and ready to go.

Final drives rearely have problems, and they're pretty cheap. so it wouldn't be a big deal to sell it. But, on the other hand, a FD doesn't take up much room.

If you're interested in selling some of the extra parts, get in touch. There are a few things I'm watching for.
