Swing Arm and Final Drive Unit
« on: September 22, 2011, 11:09:24 AM »
Hi All,

I am about to strip down the above, my Clymer manual says to discard the grease cap, I assume (as the manual doesn't say...) that I can destroy the old whilst trying to get it out as there doesn't seem to be any other way.

Also, I need to get the final drive casing aqua blasted and want to strip the unit down, is it feasible for someone of my limited mechanical knowledge to be able to set it up when I commence re-build or should I give it to a specialist?

Any help gratefully appreciated

Chris

Chris - Special tools are needed to pull it all apart, and if you don't have them it's probably best to have a specialist do the work.

If it's a good functional drive, why not clean it assembled? Perhaps soda blasting, or chemicals for cleaning aluminum?

You need one specialized tool to remove the nut holding the shaft in the final drive .

I don't know if you can source one locally or not, but with it, the nut isn't coming of, let alone properly torquing it during reassembly .

To diasaaemble the drive shaft, you need a tool that works pretty much like a McPherson strut compressor, so unless you can get these tools,or can make them, it's going to be difficult to do it yourself .

Thanks Guys, I suspected as much.

I am going to give it to the specialist to do.

Cheers
