R65LS Carb leak

Members,

Scenario:

New diaphragms, floats, needles, OEM gas lines installed.  Still the carbs leak a little.  I put hose clamps on the gas line at the carb thinking that was the culprit.  I still have gas pooling along the edge/lip of the carb that meets the float bowl, then it pools to the underside of the float bowls and onto the return spring bracket.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is??????????

Is the hinge pin that's serrated on one end in all the way ?

I had one that wasn't in all the way causing the float to hang up .

So you have one of two problems, too much fuel is in the float bowl, or somehow the fuel is getting around the gasket between the bowl and carb body .

As far the clamps on the fuel line, they really aren't necessary if you are using a .250 in, diameter fuel line, it's a gravity feed fuel system .

If the floats are not set-up properly, fuel can leak past the float needle and its seat. Or there could be a bit of debris holding the float needle off the seat.

Did you replace both float needles and the seats? The latest float needle have a rubber tip that seals quite well with a new seat and no grit.

Are you using the OEM cork float bowl gaskets? They work very well when new but sometimes can be problematic if reused after taking a permanent "set".

Somtimes the stuff that drips off the carb is from the engine breather that runs inside the inlet from the airbox to the carb.
I saw a hint that turning the hoseclamp around 180 degrees so that the tightening screw is at the top can minimise this.
I have done this and it seems to have fixed my annoying drip onto the gear lever.

I spoke to the BING Agency people, and was advised to check the following:

remove the float bowls and measure the fuel level in the bowl, should be per BING approximately 1/2" from the top.  In checking mine, the left was a fraction more in the left than in the right, the right appeared spot on.

with the petcock in the off position and the float bowls removed, raise the floats up completely, open the petcock and slowly...........lower the floats to the precise point when the gas begins to flow, and check to see if the top of the floats are parallel with the bottom of the carb, which both of mine were.

with the petcock closed, clean and dry the bowls and re-install, turn on the petcock, wait 10 minutes +- and see if any thinks leak, no leaks

Both gasket are new purchased from MAX's, is there a difference from OEM BING gasket than those purchased ie MAX's???

When re-installing the gasket it appeared they shrunk..........they basically had to be stretched into place......I've re-installed the gaskets and replaced the bowls.  Drove the 65LS 10 miles or so, came home and all is dry thus far.  Tomorrow will allow for a longer ride to see if it leaks up return.

I've read about some rubber gasket from "real gasket" that are for the  the BMW R65LS and many other BMW models and applications.  I've ordered them just in case.  They cost several times more per piece, but will wait and see.  Has anyone had any experience with this gasket?

Ah ha! Reusing shriveled up, old carb bowl gaskets is an exercise in frustration. As you appear to have discovered.

Not sure if there's a difference in Max's and Bing's gaskets, but if you'll send me a pair of each, I'll happily provide an unbiased opinion.
