Swapping in a replacement bean can is fairly simple. And the Airheads are not overly particular as to exact position to get the engine fired up for timing.
When I remove / service / replace the cans on my R65s, I use a marker to put a dot on the bean can mounting lugs and another adjacent mark on the timing chain case. That will get the can close enough.
After a warm up ride, check ignition timing with a strobe. Bet you will be very close.
BTW, where are you and what model year R65 do you ride? Post up a photo so we'll all know the bike really does exist.
