Brake Lights
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:47:42 AM »
I'm having electrical problems with my 1979 r65. All the electrical components of my bike are working(turn signals, horn, headlights, etc) except the the brake light.  The rare light does turn on but nothing happens when I use the foot brake or hand brake. The light just doesn't illuminate brighter?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

First would be to check the brake light to see if it's burned out or not .

Check the bulb socket for corrosion .

Locate the fuse box under the tank, it has 2, 8 amp fuses, check the fuse for security and cleanliness, you may want to bend the tabs that contact the fue, they are known to be problem on these bikes .

Replacing the fusce box with a 'blade' type fuse would be a good to get out of the way, so they don't give you problems when you're on the road .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

After completing Bob's good suggestions, if there's still no brake light action I'd begin to look at the brake light switches, both front hand lever and foot brake.

I think the poor OEM euro-style ceramic fuses and contacts are highly suspect. They may actually look OK, but... [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

Caig Labs "DeOxit" cleans connections. Radio Shack may still carry it in applicator pen.  (One of the few really good brand name products the Shack has sold)  Otherwise, google Caig Labs.  Anyone who mantains "electrics" exposed to weather ought to have some.

A good source of high quality fuses and holders is the car stereo industry.  Feeding big rumpa rumpa amps takes good wiring.  Try Crutchfield on the 'net.
