plugs
« on: August 18, 2011, 10:54:52 AM »
I realize this has been covered before but I'm afraid I'm still not completely clear on the spark plug issue.  My 83 has the stock electronic ignition and the stock metal-cover spark plug caps, which I assume are the 5k resistor caps, right?  So can I assume the NGK BP6ES are non resistor plugs, which they seem to be, or am I wrong?  I ride in SoCal, it is not a track bike, and I am not a knee dragger, at least not on purpose.
Thanks
Steve

If your plug caps are the originals or a correct replacement part they will be 5K resistor caps which is what is required for the electronic ignition bikes. If a replacement I suppose it's possible they could be the 1k ohm caps for the points ignition bikes. That seems unlikely though as I don't think the 1K ohm caps are available anymore. The parts fiches are all showing the same part number for both 79 - 80 bikes and 81 -84 bikes which will be a 5K Cap. You would have to measure them to be absolutely sure.

Your BP6ES is not a resistor plug. A BPR6ES would be a resistor plug.

I use the BP6E V which is the platinum version of the "S".  Getting hard to find.  Also works in my Honda mover.   ;)

Better measure the resistance.  I thought the metal cover original BMW sparkies were 1K resistance.  NGK resistor plugs usually come in at about 4.3K.

Currently using the BPR7EIX Iridiums with NGK 0 ohm caps (LZW).  They have been on there for years and many thousands of miles.  I think I'm over 30,000 miles on 'em now.

I might switch to the cooler BPR8EIX just to be different.
