Handle bar clamps 7/8" will they fit?
« on: June 01, 2007, 08:00:48 AM »
Hello.....

I want to either put new higher handlebars on my 1980 R65 or possibly see if a slightly higher set of clamps will make the riding position more acceptable.

I am looking at a 7/8" clamps ...if I put these on will they fit without altering the top brake hose, clutch cable throttle cables.

If I have to alter all of the above I might as well get new handlebars instead.

Thanks.

7/8" bars are just a hair larger in diameter than the stock bars and your control perches may get cracked while forcing them on the 7/8" bar.  Some are fine, some are too tight.  I have read about people grinding down the OD of the r/h bar for a few inches for the necessary clearance.  Sounds like a lot of work!

when i put the clip ons on mine i was able to get them on very carefully, the only problem i had was the throttle would stick so i pulled the right one off and had that one turned down to the correct size.

I may have expressed myself badly...   these clamps have a 7/8" rise (this is what I am assuming) they are on UK ebay (item 140121391030) so if they raise the handlebars by 7/8" will it stretch any of the cables and braking hose?

Thanks

Oh, totally changes things.  I thought you were putting on some 7/8" bars that had more rise!  I doubt that putting on 7/8" risers will cause you to run out of slack.  If they do you might be able to deal them to me if you get them for a good price...  I tried putting a set of RS bars on our R65RS and ran into some clearance issues that would probably be resolved with about that much rise.  If the brake hose gets a bit tight then you can easily make another steel piece from a chunk of automotive brake tubing, we had to do that when we were experimenting with the RS bars.

He he....   Yes I think I will put a bid in for them, if they don't fit I can double the price and offer them to you :-)

Fitting them would be easier than stripping the whole lot down for higher bars (that and the extra parts),,, mind you the longer I leave it the more I am getting used to the standard bars!

What is the rise of the handlebar on your bike, now?  'S' or 'Euro' bars?  If so, 7/8 of an inch might bee too much for your brake hose.  Is this what your set-up looks like?  (from my '79)  If so, there is not much play.

That is pretty much what an '80 setup looks like and why I mentioned to him he could make a different length steel line from auto parts store tubing.  That's what Jonny and I did when we were experimenting with the RS bars...

I wondered what you were talking about when you mentioned the steel line.

Yes, that would make for an easy modification.
