Driveshaft drain plug

Well, I have had this bike close to twenty years now & this morning did the routine drivetrain oil change & the driveshaft drain plug somehow stripped. Any suggestions on a quick & easy fix?

I don't think you have too many choices here, drill and tap it for a helicoil insert, or just drill and tap it for the next size up drain plug, if there is enough metal left in the area. I guess you could try installing it with sealant that is oil resistant, to get you to the end of the riding season, then take it apart.

I figured that would be the answer, I was hoping that maybe they offered an oversize self tapping plug like they do in the automotive field. Thing that's weird is it went straight in, but all of a sudden you could tell it wasn't tightening up. Time to check the MSC catalog.

 Hey all,
Nice new style web site. I had the same problem with my drive shaft drain that is in the final drive housing. I ended up plugging the hole with JB weld. I need to remove the final drive housing to change the oil but that only happens once a year. I was told by my welder that he could weld inside the hole and re-tap it. Tap it and use a Heli-coil or tap the hole to the next size. Either way you will need to completely disassemble the final drive unit. Even if you try to use a bottoming tap the isn't enough clearance.

    hello
         had the same problem except it was the fill plug and the final drive level
         plug  I did not have to strip the drive down  and was able to drill,tap and  put
         a threaded collared bushinig  in on  both  using a perment gade of loctite ,
         brinig it back to the standard threads, there not alot of clearance on the
         driveshaft plug for bottoming tap to thread and need to grind it down to
         get a full thread in ,did this on my brigdeport to keep it straight, the alloy
         is soft and wil esaily stripthen tap with a large tap.
          Have done about 600 miles with tihs now,
