Electrical Help needed
« on: April 16, 2011, 04:18:12 PM »
So I got all the fluids changed, fired her up, and lo and behold no turn signals, no brake light.  Checked the fuses, replaced the relay, still nothing.  I should mention its a 1984 R65, with a Luftmeister fairing.  The connection at the fairing seems good.  Any ideas where to start troubleshooting?  I also replaced the coil over the winter, but that shouldn't affect the lighting, right?
Any help will be appreciated.

A multimeter is your friend! :-)

I had a few electrical problems, one was that i had no rear light but it worked when key was on parking setting, turned out to be ignition to main loom connector!

Other problem i had was rear brake switch not working again this was the connector!

So my tip would be check EVERY connector on the bike and use contact cleaner.

The other thing to do is check for voltage and continuity at the bulb  holders this is what i did first to tray and trace it back. and also have a wiring diagram to hand.

Hope this helps!

Coincidence? There's a thread going right now about the R65's fuses...

I had the same problem on my '81 R65 and I, too, "checked the fuses". Kinda cleaned 'em up and the clip holders, too. Or so I thought. But it's the bleepin' fuses. Those ceramic-bodied, chewing gum foil wrapper fuses.

Dump those lame euro-trash fuses and holder. I'm quoting Roller Bob, "just about anything would be an improvement over the original ."

Check the "Fuse Panel" thread.[smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Both of those effected electrical circuits go through the same fuse .

And until you receive your 4-gang fuse block from WiringProducts.com I recommend liberal application of sand paper on the fuse tips and the receivers, and bend those receivers inward a little to apply more pressure, and apply some dielectric grease from Radio Shack or a car parts store.

This forum is the best!!  I put a fuse block in, and everything works great.  Cost me about $13.00 from the local auto parts store and about 20 minutes of my time.
Thanks again.

I beg to differ. I have owned a Morris Minor.

Sympathies extended. I've had an MGA and an E-model Jag. Never again. [smiley=furious3.gif]
