Minor Center Stand annoyance.
« on: April 07, 2011, 06:55:46 AM »
The tang that we step on to lower the center stand on our R65 seems to be wrong someway in mine. Everytime I corner hard to the left, It would hit the pavement before my footpegs. I think it should be bended is someway but having no references on what it should look like, I'm leaving it alone for some time now.

I can't find a picture of it from the net, should it be bended someway or is there something wrong with it?

  • It seemed like a good idea at the time...

The tang should just be used to pull the center stand down to the ground and then the foot plate should be used when leveraging the bike up on the stand.  The tang was probably stood upon and bent down.  It should be just about horizontal when the stand is up and tuck in close to the muffler, right at the header clamp  GENTLY bend yours back into the correct position and it should be fine.  Sounds like your center stand may be hanging too low as well.  You have to be leaned over REALLY far to drag that tang...

Are the rubber plugs at the ends of the center stand tubes contacting the frame ?

Is the stand being retracted all the way by the springs ?

On the '81 model year bikes, the original center stand did not have a foot plate at the end of the left center stand tube, all of the forces needed to get the bike on the stand were exerted on the tang that is welded to the left tube .

I replaced my original stand on my '81 R65 last september, if I had known what a difference the later model made, I would have replaced it decades ago !!!!!

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Haha, I did saw the newer center stands, but my location prevents me from acquiring these kind of parts without dishing out shipping fees more expensive than the item's worth.

The center stand rubber plugs(or what's left of it) are contacting the frame. I think there's no problem with it hanging too low.
I'll try bending it today.

I was practicing doing u-turns at idle speed with first gear on when this happened. Hopefully I'll be able to wear these footpegs down already the next time I ride.  ;D

Thanks for the help!  :)

When I first got the r65 the tag was bent. But I had the whole center stand off and cut the tang off and welded / formed a thicker, longer more substantial one on. See if you can find some one to do that for you.
