On/Off switch issues
« on: March 31, 2011, 04:25:49 PM »
Hey gang, new guy here.  Try to put a new on off switch on my bike.  Think I found the right switch, but starting to worry.  The one on mine was broken off when I bought it.  Still started though, but I want a working switch.

Does the switch on you bike have a curve to it? My replacement does, but it does not want to settle in place properly.

Does anyone know where an exploded diagram may be of this section of the bike?  I can't find one.  I thought that might help.

Can some send me a pix of what you handle looks like so I can see where the switch sits when off and on?

Thanks for the help.

Milo

What year is your bike?  The 78-80 model years are different from the 81-84...

There are a number of places where you can find the parts fiche files for the bikes, here is one:

Welcome, Milo. Glad to have you aboard.

To answer one of your questions, the right-hand switch group has the kill switch. It is "hot" when in the horizontal position. When flipped either up or down, the kill switch will shut down the ignition system but will also leave the battery "on". Can you say "drained battery" if you then forget to switch off the primary ignition?

The locks can be a little hard to find:

Hey, sorry for the delay getting back to you guys...

The switch I have is WRONG.  Finally figured it out.  My bike is an '82 R65.  I need a plug that looks like the following...

I am calling the "plug" the part of the switch the part that fits in
the housing, and the "handle" the part of the switch you actually
touch to turn the bike on and off.

Does that make sense?  The back plug must be 1/2 inch in
diameter or so and the "handle" needs to be dead center and curve into the center of the bike, not away.

According to the exploded diaphragm someone was kind enough to leave, I apparently can't buy just the switch.  It's a unit.  So I'll have to hit the motorcycle junkyards and hope for the best.

Lee at re-psycle has been helping me, so I am hopeful.

Thanks!  I've another question I need to ask too, so please look to that post also.
