Airhead Tool Kit

Hi Gang,

My R65LS, (that I haven't ridden yet) does not have a tool kit.

Besides the normal channels like IBMWR or Ebay, are there other places to pick up a tool kit at a reasonable price?

Motobins have several tool kits, genuine BMW for something like 180$ and some of their own at about half that. They also have empty tool rolls if you want to put your own kit together. Most kits seem be aimed at the mainstream airheads and so have more tools in them than an R65 kit ever did so building your own kit might be a good option. Its not hard to imagine what your likely to need at the side of the road and 3 sizes of Allen key and 3 or 4 spanners covers most things.

I always hesitate to use "mainstream airheads" to differentiate our bikes from the other airheads in case it sounds like ours are automatically inferior in some way which of course they are not. Just different in a few respects and in some cases better.

I have always preferred to think of "mainstream airheads" as ordinary while ours are extra-ordinary.

The BMW tools are especially nice.  I would put a kit together piece-meal, as suggested.

$18 for a tool roll from Motobins, vs $20 for the same roll from Bob's BMW (Kathys).  I don't recommend being tempted by the "Sport pouch", as it holds too much, gets too big, and is heavier than you need to be hauling around.  (Voice of experience)

I don't see where Motobins offers the BMW spanners individually.  You can get them from any BMW dealer (inc. your local automobile parts counter), and they are listed on any of the many microfiche programs available online.  I see Bob's finally updated their website!

What a fun thread - I like what Marc says about the R65's being not just ordinary but Extra Ordinary!

On Rob's thread - I'd buy the sleeve from Motobins but unless I was buying more stuff, wouldn't the freight kill me?  It's not cost effective to order onesie orders from them.

Lucky Lou - would love for you to post your picture and note what's inside the kit.

I bought the smaller size tool roll that Rob mentioned, then proceeded to select tools that I wanted specific to R65 roadside repairs. The complete tool kit and roll fits in the R65 tail piece storage.

Want more? I also bought the Tube Stash that slides into the frame's top tube. Spark plugs and plug socket plus a few other items. A really stealthy place to protect your "stuff".

The tool roll has the following
Plyers
Screw driver with phillips and flat blade
Terminal screwdriver
Allen keys 3 to 7mm
Box spanners 13 to 19 and 21 to 22mm
Spanners 7/8mm 10/11mm 12/14mm 13/17mm and 19/22mm
Dont know if this would vary between US/Eu
I also have the manual on Disc just in case.

You can buy a complete toolkit from Hucky's for less cost than any dealer I've found - and Hucky will also sell you individual tools/specialized BMW tools as well.

Yes - I like the sockets that are included in the set.
I always use the 21/22mm for spark plug work,  and the 13/19 for the center nut on the valve covers.

The pliers are a bit worthless, though, IMO.

And the tire pumps are definitely "bling".  Or a concours have-to-have.
