Does anyone have any experience using the vw bus 050type bosch points?

No experience but I have read that there are substitutes that work. Points are so simple that if they are physically the same they should work just fine.

Also... the Ignition Control Unit (ICU) up under the fuel tank is the same part number as the one installed in my 1986 Volkswagen Cabriolet.

Ditto the Hall sensor in the Cabrio's distributor. It matches the ones in the R65's bean can. Talking R65s with the electronic ignition in the 'can'.

BMW bike and VW relays, with a pin number and spade diagram in hand, can usually be sourced at the local NAPA store.

Alternate parts vendors are golden and often less expensive than dealerships.
