Throttle grip loose....

I came home last night in the porering rain through central London. Oh what fun! To add to the enjoyment the throttle seemed very loose. Rotationally and up and down the bars. Making smooth pulling away a chore. With lots of stiffness through the rotation to pull the throttle but slackness at the same time. Hope that makes sense? Any help would be great.

Early or late bike ? = twin cables from the twist grip or single cable to an under tank splitter.

Which ever it is remove the top cover and check out the bevel gears at the twist grip and in addition if later model check the splitter mechanism isn't sticking.

Hi Barry, it's an 84. Is there a way of tightening the twist grip up. As in an up and down the handlebar it moves quiet a bit or is this normal. Haynes is not being very helpful in this case.

Do you mean the whole twist grip/brake lever casting is moving on the handle bar ?

 If so there is a 4mm Allen screw underneath the casting which can be tightened gently. If this doesn't work it might be that there is a small wedge or perch missing.

If you decide to try and tighten the allen screw that holds the entire perch on the bars I would highly recommend checking to see if the wedge is there first. The perch will not tighten without it. What seems like one more little bit of tightening on the screw and you will hear a snap when the casting breaks. It doesn't take much (I know from first hand experience) and you will be replacing the entire throttle assembly.
