Choke

I've just looked at the article on carb rebuilding and realise that the black plastic cover for my fuel enrichener appears to be held on with rivets! not a slot in sight. How in dogs name am I meant to get the cover off?

The 'choke' carb enricher is on the other side of the carby. The black cover is just a blank I guess to make a left carb or a right carb. Anyway, dont remove it!
Turn the carb over and remove the screws from the small alloy cover. Just do one carb at a time and take note of how all the parts are sitting.

Roger Bruce's comments. It is possible to reassemble the enrichener with the disc 180 degrees out of position and/or left disc in right carb. They don't work well afterwards. Digital photos during disassembly can be very helpful.

...and there's always the question of whether a PO or mechanic has mixed up the enricher parts.

Having pointed Balibeemer in the direction of Snowbum's article I read it again myself and came away slightly confused or at least it took a while to sink in. So I've come up with a simple diagram to show enricher parts correctly assembled.

The enricher disc has a pear shaped slot which should be towards the top of the disc with the narrow end pointing towards the cylinder head and a number of small holes which should be towards the bottom of the disc.  The diagram shows the orientation of the disc as a shadow over the Carb body.  I don't pretend that the diagram is very accurate in terms of the position and size of the holes although it's meant to show a RH Carb with the enricher off. With the enricher full on the disc rotates anticlockwise so that the wider end of the pear shaped slot is positioned over the top left port on the carb.

I didn't take those pictures though. Must have found them on google myself and I hadn't noticed that they are not a matched pair.

Assuming the top picture is the right way up it shows a RH carb with the choke fully off against the lower stop.

The lower picture is confusing because it's been "folded down" off the carb so looks upside down with respect to the top picture but shows the choke almost fully on not quite. Notice the shaft angle is not quite at 45 Deg

Transposing the lower image on to the top has been driving me crazy all day  (scrambled the brain). First I was sure they were wrong then when I realized they are also on Snowbums website I thought they must be right. When I got home from work I used a piece of  tracing paper then folded it over to superimpose the lower image on the top.

I was right the first time Upper picture shows choke fully off and lower picture shows choke almost fully on.

I’m going to try and modify my diagram to show the shaft orientation and the dot that points towards the operating arm and perhaps do one with the choke off and one with it on.

Edit:  I've modified the diagram and added one showing the choke on. Also done the same on the FAQ post. Hope that's ok Rob.

One of the easy ways to get it right if your doing this for the first time is to make sure the punch mark on the shaft end always goes to the same side as the cable.
Always seperate the carbs and strip them individualy so parts are not mixed up.
