Rubber Plugs
« on: November 18, 2010, 01:15:03 PM »
My headlight bucket on my '79 has several holes in it for wiring to pass through.  Most of the holes that are not used are sealed with rubber plugs.  However some plugs are not there (3...different sizes).  Unfortunately the parts fiche at Real OEM and A&S don't show these plugs in the buckets so I'm guessing I will not be able to get the plugs from a BMW dealer.  Yesterday I went to every source in town that I could think of to get some plugs...no luck.

Has anyone ever had to get plugs like this and where did you get them?

Besides the two holes on the sides for mounting, my '79 shell only has one large hole at the bottom, where the headlight harness comes in, surrounded by a large, pliable rubber collar.  I see no other holes.

That's interesting Rob.  I also have some bulbs/wiring that are unused (it was  taped back into the harness when I took the bike apart).  These (2) bulbs have grommets on the wiring and look like they originally went into this headlight bucket but for what purpose I cannot guess.  I've checked my wiring diagram and I can't figure it out.

Since this bike was originally built for the German market and was later imported into Canada when the owner emigrated I'm guessing that either there was a different lighting set-up for Germany/Europe or that perhaps somewhere along the line the original harness was replaced by one off a different model and possible the headlight bucket was changed too.  Perhaps some of our European friends will chime in with their opinions.  I also seem to have a difference in the frame that I will describe in a separate post and see if someone can give me some insight as to why this would be.

Try an autobody paint and supply store for a variety of different hole plugs. Usually, there's a display board of the different trim and cap bits.

I keep a variety of different bits in the shop for needs just as yours.

Thanks Monte...I'll try my local autobody supply.

Bob I have now taped up the wires and hidden them behind the headlight bucket.  I can see one of the wires that goes to the bulb and it is white/black.  I can't see the other wire now.

Do you have a small light bulb mounted in the headlight reflector ?

There's a gray wire with a black spiral band that  is for this light bulb .

Yes I have that "parking" lamp mounted in the reflector.  The two extra ones I am speaking of are smaller that the parking lamp.

I found a good assortment of plugs in the drawers at the pre-packaged specialty hardware area of our local big-box home improvement store (Lowe's).  They had the perfect size for plugging the valves of my pure air system at the air box, before I removed it completely.  There were plugs for everything from about 1/8" up to 1".

Most large electrical component suppliers should sell plgs and grommets of all sizes, i use RS components here in the UK that said my European spec 1979 has only one entry hole and no spare wires ??

The twin-shock R65 headlight shells were more shallow than the big bikes, and they were uniform in their smoothness all around.

The big bike's shell has two depressions in it, I believe, and were much deeper, as the main wiring junction panel used to reside at the rear.
