Frankenframe???

There are several differences in my '79 that I have come across.  This latest one has to do with the frame.  Just so you know this bike was first sold in Germany and at some point later was imported into Canada.

If you look at this parts diagram from the A&S parts fiche (I really like their new fiche setup) you will see the standard frame for the '79.

http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog2/MicroList.aspx?id=51897&catID=46&catname=46+Frame+and+mounting+parts

My frame is different in that it has a couple of extra bolt holes in the lower part of the frame (one on each side).  The holes are right through the frame as opposed to the motor mount holes that are in the standard frame.  You can see in the diagram that the motor mount holes are in a fitting that was welded onto the frame.  The additional holes that I have are located about 4 inches aft of the rear motor mount hole...just below the rear of the transmission.  The two holes look like it is a factory set up...nothing Mickey Mouse about it.

Does anyone have any idea what the purpose of these two additional holes might be?  It might give me some insight into the other differences I have on my bike.

Oh yes the frame number on the bike is a legitimate R65 frame number it appears because the RealOEM parts site recognizes the number for a '79 R65.  Of course someone may have put the frame number plate on this frame somewhere along the line if they used a frame from another model.

Has anyone got any thoughts?

Mike,

On my frame the  footrests are bolted through the frame just where you describe directly below the gearbox endplate and as you say they are not shown on that parts diagram frame.

My bike is the same as Barry's.  Starting in '81 they moved the footpeg mount (on the left, at least) further rearward, with a bracket.

Thanks guys.  That is interesting.  My footrests were and are mounted on the rear motor-mount stud.  Also the extension arm for one of the footrests is longer than the other.  Doesn't cause any discomfort when riding though.  This explains why I had to make up another, longer mount stud when I added the after-market side stand.  Now I'll have to see if I should mount the footrests at these other locations and see if it is any more comfortable.

The different set-back in the pegs is normal as to put both feet approx the same distance behind the jugs since the r/h jug sits further back...
