Cable Splitter

I've seen posts over the past few years about problems with getting the cable splitters apart on the '81 and later bikes .

The splitter on my '81 takes all of 1 minute to get apart and back together again .

So, I've always wondered what the issue was .

Well today after replacing the parts at the hand grip for the throttle and still having a bound up throttle, I decided to pull the cables and do a clean and lubrication on them, they aren't in the greatest of shape, quite a few kinks in them .

I removed the cables as an assembly, tried to get the cables disengaged from the 'piston' or plug that the cables go into .

It was quite obvious that the design on the splitter on my '82 LS and my'81 R65 were quite different .

There was no way the forward cable was going to come free from the piston, that and there is no clearance between the 'piston' and the housing of the splitter like there is on my '81 R6 to get the cable free of the 'piston' .

After messing with it for about 45 minutes, I decided to take a small drill bit and make a small hole in the slot in the 'piston' right next to the housing, so the swaged end of the front cable can fit through it and come free from the 'piston' .

That makes life a whole lot easier getting the assembly apart now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like I actually got something accomplished today .

They are a pain, but do-able after one gets it figured out and holds one's mouth just so while doing it -

I take a pic of the thing before I start taking it apart so I can get the threaded adjuster at the front back to where it was (assuming that it was working OK to begin with).  I then back the front nut all the way off to maximize how much free cable length I get to work with - I also disconnect the cables from the carb end - or at least unhook the springs.   THEN, when I unscrew the body of the splitter, I can JUST barely get enough cable length from the front cable to get the disc far enough out of the housing to wiggle that front cable off.   The (2) lower cables are a bit finnicky but not nearly as much of a PITA, IMHO..   Of course, getting new cables in and getting it back together and re-adjusted sometimes takes more than 1 try.. 8-)
