BMW Mirrors
« on: November 03, 2010, 03:02:33 AM »
I am thinking about upgrading my mirrors next year.
I have low bars, so I need a long-stem mirror.
Right now I have the long-stem metal ones (round).  They are in O.K. shape, but I am hoping to find something that is simpler to adjust.

Does anyone have this type (esp. in long-stem), and how do you like them?

It looks like there is only one mirror for both sides, and the mirror body is rotated to compensate for right/left.

They look like the cheap and nasty aftermarket mirrors that need the bolt loosened for major adjustment and only have limited 'easy' adjustment of the mirrorglass itself.
My LS had chrome rectangular mirors from the factory, one of which I broke in a crash. I then used bar-end mirrors for years untill I found a set of second hand genuine harley (sportster?) mirrors that are very similar to the original. I have had the harley mirrors on the bike for about 10 years and they work fine, minimal vibration, easy to adjust etc.
They have 'Harley Davidson' engraved on the stem in small letters and I don't think anyone has ever noticed that thay aren't BMW.
I paid $30 bucks for the pair from a throw out table at the local HD dealer.

You could try a google search for Z900 mirrors. They are very similar to the style  in your diagram.

They are are nice mirrors, at least the originals were, not sure about the pattern ones which are still available.

Now that is unusual! - Small letters? No wonder they were for sale!

Thanks to Bruce's post, I googled Sportster mirrors, and came up with this.  In black!!!

They look almost identical to Bruce's.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I wanted to go with the "stock" BMW look, and found a decent deal on NOS black BMW mirrors - unfortunately they are the short stem ones (work fine on tall bars, but on low bars on my LS I can't really see behind me with them).   I mave to to revert back to cut-off handgrips and my Napoleans.  They provided a nice view to the rear but due to handlebar length/throttle tube length I could never get the right side mirror to stay put for more than 80 miles at a time..

I had to give up my bar-end mirrors when I installed BMW heated grips.

I almost included the link!  I don't know why I didn't.

I just Google Imaged "sportster mirror", and found what looked good.
I've no idea what size the stem is, yet.  Good point!

I plan on visiting a Harley dealer or two and see what I can find.  I may even take my calipers with me!
