Ground Wire
« on: October 23, 2010, 06:14:13 PM »
Unfortunately when I took my '79 apart I did not label all the harnesses and wires (Part of the learning process).  I think I have most of them figured out but I just came across a little challenge.

I was in the process of re-installing the tachometer cable and noticed in the Clymer manual that there is a ground wire attached to the retaining bolt for the cable at the transmission end.  I have a cable with a black wire coming out of it.  This wire has a round terminal at the end of it.  This cable is part of the wiring that runs to the oil pressure switch.  Is this the ground wire that attaches to the tach cable retaining bolt.  If not, can anyone tell me what cable the ground wire that attaches to the retaining bolt is part of?

If this is the wire that runs down the left side of the frame, splitting off before the final wire terminates at the oil pressure switch, then yes, it is a ground wire and it connects at the lower left-hand fastener of the 4 that hold the transmission to the engine.  So this is right near the shift lever.

The neutral switch wires (to the transmission) also come out of this same sub-harness.

The wire that goes under the bolt that retains the speedometer cable, is the negative or earthing wire from the battery, it's a large diameter one compared to the other wires on the bike .
