'79 R65 Clutch Adjustment
« on: October 09, 2010, 01:53:21 PM »
Does anyone know the specs for the clutch adjustment for the '79 (different than the 81 & later models I believe)?

I think the procedure is the same on the earlier bikes, pre-1981 .
'81 R65
'82 R65 LS
'84 R65 LS
'87 Moto Guzzi V65 Lario
'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

OK, problem solved.  I assumed that there was some kind of clearance adjustment at the clutch arm end of the cable.  The measurement is actually done at the clutch lever (.08 in).

Crossrodes, you were right in a sense. The method of adjustment described in the 79- 80 riders handbook is different to the later bikes but it was quite complicated and both methods are trying to achieve same objective which is 2 mm free play at the handle bar lever and with the handle bar lever at half travel the clutch operating arm should be parallel to the gearbox end cover for max. mechanical advantage. I think most people would say the parrallel arm bit is not that critical but that's what BMW were trying to achieve and that's what the 201mm measurement will give you.

Thanks Barry.  I remember reading that part about the operating arm being parallel.  I'll make sure that is the case.
