Engine removal

Hi All,

Haven't been on for a good while due to family and business commitments.

I'm making a real effort to get the bike stripped down ready for rebuild over the coming winter. I have semi-stripped the engine and started to try and undo the drive shaft. The clutch plates are stuck together so I can't put the bike into 4th or 5th gear to lock the shaft.

Any ideas on what to do next?

Once I have the engine out, I can crack on with the frame,re-wire wheel re-furb,paint and then the engine re-build.

Hopefully you have not removed the rear wheel, yet.

Standard procedure is to stomp down on the rear brake (you may want to "preload it a little with the wing-nut) as hard as you can, while loosening or tightening the fasteners.

The torque from the wrench really wants to overcome the brake, so do your best!

Hi Long time no see...
The rear brake method is good if you have someone to help you if not...
Put the bike on the center stand with a piece of board under it 1/2inch should do it put a bit of weight on the front end to raise the rear wheel off the floor then rotate it this should enable you to get a gear and lock the drive if you take the plugs out and remove the front engine cover you will be able to rotate the engine and drive train with an Allen key in the generator drive (6mm) disconnect the battery first.

It's been a long winter and summer so far, looking forward to spending some "quality" time with the bike over the next few months.

BTW, I have "acquired" a 1980 Suzuki SP400 (another barn find) a month or so ago, this one is a runner (!) and my son is taking this project on leaving me free to concentrate on the R65...

Back in 81 or 82 I bought a new GN400 which was the roadster derived from the SP400. Engine was a gem, very torquey for a jap and it never missed a beat in 14 years.

Your are right, the engine on the 400 is lovely to ride, this one needs a strip down and re-build as well, but I want to finish the beemer first!
