Dawg has fleas...
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:04:55 PM »
Well, maybe not fleas but the first potentially serious issue since I've been flogging it for a couple of months.  Saturday on the way home from work, after a couple mile 80 mph stretch, the oil light came on after I dropped back to 60 mph.  I pulled in the clutch, killed/restarted the engine, and oil light went out.  I continued on at the normal 60 mph and the light came back on after about 8 miles and extinguished after the same drill.  It came on a third time pulling into my street and after a block and pulling into the garage it was still on.  I have not started it since.

I ordered a mechanical AutoMeter oil pressure gauge that reads up to 150 psi so I will try to find a "Tee" and plumb the gauge in along with the light and see what's going on.  If I still have pressure when the idjit light goes on I'll know it's a wiring or switch issue...

Another remote possibility, the oil filter bypass valve that's located in the oil filter cavity, I've heard of a few isolated cases of a weak spring over time and allow the ball to unseat relieving pressure .

I'll have to keep that in mind if it in fact does turn out to be an actual loss of oil pressure.  The gauge shipped today so maybe I'll get a chance to play with it next week.

I had an oil pressure problem after an oil and filter change about a year after I got my bike .

Changed the oil and filter after I got home from work, the next day, the oil pressure light would only go out if you brought the rpm's up to 1500 .

Had the dealer pick up the bike, their fix was to blow compressed air  at 120 psi into the tube in the center of the oil filter cavity to reset the oil pressure regulator .

Haven't had a problem since, that was back in May of 1982 .

Interesting fix, Bob.  This one I'm not sure about.  The light comes on and stays on, I kill/restart engine and it goes out.  Almost sounds like a defective switch, or maybe the bypass thing but won't know where to look without the gauge...

I was quite skeptical about the fix .

Especially after paying $100 to have the bike picked up, and another $75 for the 'repair' .

I could have been told a load of horse manure as well, guess I'll never know for sure .

But the problem has yet to re-occur 28 years later .
