Monte, cue the guitar

success! it was the carbs, or the air filter. I rebuilt the carbs, (the o-rings were very flat and cracked on closer examination) and changed out the diaphrams. good cleaning (with pine sole). I changed the air filter. not sure it needed it or not, but I figured it couldn't hurt. Anyway, it runs like a scalded dog! I just got back for a long(ish) ride in the country, feels good to be back on the road!

Well slap me in the chops and call me Willard!  Let me be the first to offer congratulations although I would have never guessed the carbs.  Ride safely Ivan!

yeah, I would have bet money it was electrical. It just seemed obvious that I had an electrical problem, that it was electrical. But the way it was acting was classic fuel problems. Once i got the carbs apart and could look at the o-rings under magnification it was plain to see that the o-rings were toast.

I just rode in to work this morning, and even though it's raining, I'm pumped!

I love riding in the rain, as long as it's not too hard. Anyone else?

I don't love it, it's just better than not riding at all.  In Western Oregon in the winter, those are about my only options.
