Clutch Lube

There used to be either a posting or a Wiki that showed photos of where to lube the various clutch parts when re-assembling.  I have been searching for it and can't find it.  Anyone know where it is?

Well, this is a link to the article URL that I wrote, but it seems that our site admins are doing something with the wiki package - it has been reformatted and all the pictures are missing!

http://www.suraklyn.com/r65_wiki/wikka.php?wakka=ReplaceClutch

Basically, you want to put a VERY THIN schmear (as if you were putting a thin layer of sealant at the base of the cylinders when reinstalling them) of MOLY 60/sticky grease of your choice around the edge of the diaphragm spring where it will contact the inner pressure plate,  I also put a VERY THIN schmear on the raised portion of the pressure plate where it makes contact with the fingers of the diaphragm spring.   If you have the new style clutch carrier assembly (1981 - on) I think BMW recommends a drop of engine oil on each of those M8 bolts that go around the outside of the assembly to bolt it together.   I think anti-seize is fine too - again, use just a small bit.

Other places to put MOLY60/grease is on the tip of the clutch pushrod where it goes to push against the center of the diaphragm spring and on the transmission input shaft splines - DO NOT put any grease inside the clutch friction disk mating splines - this way, any excess grease on the clutch input shaft splines will get squeezed out the transmission side of the friction disk's splined hub and not the engine side, where it would then fall down onto the friction disk material and contaminate it with slippery goo ->not a good thing.

Be sure to put a bit of gear oil on the throwout bearing/piston cup assembly at the back of the transmission, too upon reassembly there.  IT takes a while for any gear oil to migrate out of the gearbox to lubricate that area, so it must have lubricant when you put it in.

I hope that the pictures come back - they would be helpful.
