clamp p/n for fork gaitors ?
« on: May 04, 2007, 06:20:56 PM »

OK, so I am putting together an order of nuts and bolts, etc. to go with replacing
the clutch assembly and transmission on my LS, and thought, maybe I might take the time
to take the forks off (what the heck - I rebuilt them last year) and put some rubber gaitors
on.   I believe that the part number for the fork gaitors is
31 42 1 237 205        1981-on & all R-65
but what is the part number for the clamps to use ?

Thanks in advance !!! :)

I ordered gaiters and clamps from BOB'S BMW last fall, and I havn't installed them yet, but the part number that I have for the 11 rib gaitors is : 31 42 1 234 908, and the part number for the clamps is : 07 12 9 952 121, the clamps have the numbers 47-54 on them, I guess that might mean the size in diameter 47 mm- 54mm. Hope that helps.

Thanks, Bob.
I knew that there were 11-rib ones for the "older" style airheads, and apparently
some slightly different ones (31 42 1 237 205) that they claimed for the newer
airheads, but I don't know which would fit best on the R65.   I may try these
"newer" style ones with the clamps you specify, as they must some some reasonable
range of diameters.

For the clamps I just use thick black cable ties with the catch hidden at the back, looks more in tune with the black of the bike. Has never come off or slipped in years of riding. Also used them as they cost me nowt!!!

Just remember - if the gaiter is too long, it will prevent full fork travel, which is what Duane Ausherman was explaining here:

If you go here, you can see how I pulled the bottom down as far as it could go:

Bob, you're assumption is correct, the 47-54 is the adjustment range in mm.  That is also the same clamp P/N used on the R100 bikes.  Too bad they are stainless or they could be "blued" or Parkerized like gun parts if you don't like shiny bits...

Rob, the pic of the hedge clipped into the shape of an anvil is kinda cool...

I'm not fond of shiny metal, but black plastic ty-wraps live a short life here in the desert southwest, I've had them break after one summer season. I think some sort of paint or permanent black marker might suffice in this application.

Yeah, not surprised you like that one, Justin!

And it is something I actually drive past every few weeks, not something off of the net!

It is out front of a residence.  In what used to be farm country, but is being rapidly displaced...

But this house is one of the "old" ones that has been there 40 years or so.

Rob, did you just slip the lower end of the gator down a bit, to just under the bulge where the original dust thing went?  That looks like an easy job.

Yes, exactly.

I installed them during the winter of '89-'90 when I worked at a dealership.  I replaced the steering head bearings at the same time.  That was the last time the front end has been off.  Not so many miles, but many years...
