Vetter Fairing removal on an 81 R65
« on: May 26, 2010, 02:16:48 AM »
I have an 81 R65 that has a Vetter Fairing and i would like to reset to stock and have the headlight and blinkers mounted on the forks. It seems like a mission though since i don't have the mounting brackets for the headlight or blinkers. I have only been able to find the left headlight bracket on ebay for $80, but no luck on the right side. Anyone have any suggestions on where to find these parts or on rigging something up that will work just as well? Do the blinkers mount to the same bracket as the headlight or do they have their own brackets?
Also in order to remove the blinkers and headlight from the fairing it looks like i would have to cut the wires that run to a plug. How would i go about reconnecting those wires to the plug?
I don't want to start taking my bike apart without knowing what im getting myself into. Anyone have any experience in doing this or words of wisdom to offer?
i can upload pics if necessary.
thanks in advance.

The r65 has a one piece combination headlight mounting bracket, instrument mounting bracket, turn-signal stalks.  Quite often the stalks are sawed off when people install a fairing.

What model of Windjammer is it?

My SS (I believe the final model) doesn't use BMW turn signals or headlight, so I bought some BMW turn signals and a stalk off ebay, and bought an aftermarket chrome (ick!) headlight that uses an H4 bulb, to convert mine some day.  Actually I want to be able to remove and install the fairing, as I love it for winter riding but hate it during the summer.
