Colour code for 1980 R65

How do I go about getting the correct paint code for my 1980 R65? I lost one of my side panels and the replacement (great fit) is in grey primer. I would describe the colour (and the original paint is still on the tank) as red. Looking online I have come across this site :

The 'Canyon Red' looks like it might be the one, but then there seem to be so many variations on red that I am not too sure. I know what ever I get will not match the tank, after all its some 30 years old, but at least if I paint both panels the same colour then they will not stand out like a grey panel on a red bike :-)

There should be a black tag, with the paint code on it, on the bottom side of the fuel tank .

These paint code stickers tend to migrate depending on who is working the line that day. Found mine positioned on the rear fender area under the seat. YMMV

No paint code on either the tank or underneath the seat (the bike is 30 years old) would the frame number or engine number give any clue to the type of red paint it might be?

I took a look at RealOEM.com parts site, for 1980 European model R65, came up with a Canyon Red BMW paint code 165 .

Don't know if this helps or not .

Be sure you're sitting down when you check prices from Glasurit, the BMW OEM paint providers. The concern with the cadmium range of colors is color fading over the ears. Please understand that even with the finest ($$$) OEM color mix, you will likely have a different shade on your new battery cover. [smiley=cry.gif]

Simplest fix, may be to paint the side covers in satin black, then finish with skull and crossbones !!!!!

I think the colour of your tank is 'Hell Red', my 1980 was exactly the same.

I couldn't source the paint anywhere so I tried having a litre of paint made up. Unfortunately it didn't match very well.

In the end I picked a colour I liked and re-sprayed the whole bike!

If you do manage to find the original I would be interested too so keep me updated.
