What is this unused bracket & plug on my R65?

Today was electrical connection maintenance day on my new-to-me 1983 R65.  As soon as I removed the tank I spotted an unused, empty bracket in the relay area, with a blue, six pin socket, with 5 of the pins wired to the harness, but nothing plugged in to it!

I've been riding this machine daily for about six weeks, inbetween maintenance chores, and everything works!  I can't imagine what this bracket & plug would be for.  It appears to be part of the orginal wiring harness, and the bracket appears to be an originally welded  to the top chassis tube.

Any suggestions as to what their purpose could be?   :-?

It's an accessory socket where options can be wired in that need a place to pick off juice.  I believe the heated grips may plug in here, I'll have to check the LS tomorrow and see...

It sure seems like that thing should have a cover when not in use, as one of those connectors is hot even with the key off.

It is in fact an accessory plug. Mine does have the cover on it but it also is not mounted. At some time my Wee M W was converted to dual automotive coils so that spot is now taken leaving my socket to flop about. Heated grips are among the accessories that can be fitted there. If you're clever a neat driving lamp installation can be powered off this plug.

Mine was police bike and that connector was used for blue-red headlights and rotating light on a stick mounted on rear. Also I have aditional connector for radio station connected to this one. I checked and there is no juice if the key is on off position but it gets powered if I turn the key on first position out of four and stays powered during the rest 3 positions. Wiering goes from those two flat switches on plastic cover to lamps and rotating lamp. Radio has its own switch.

Thanks for the responses.  I don't have any accessories to utilize the plug, so.....as mentioned above, I think I'll make it a high priority to put some sort of protecting and insulating cover over it to prevent accidental shorts!  (once had a loose bit of hard-ware fall into alternator on the old Dodge, resulting in direct un-fused short to ground!  Rapid and near fatal to wiring harness!)

I think -watch out!- that the unused plug may also be used to hook up turn signals if you're running a fairing of some sort. Also, there's probably an un-switched 12v power lead there that may be helpful in the future.

If I am tracing correctly the wiring diagram (according to Lord Haynes) indicates:

Pin 1 - Un-switched 12 V
Pin 2 - Low beam
Pin 3 - Switched 12 V
Pin 4 - Open
Pin 5 - High beam

Thanks Rob.  Your scanner and my old eyes, neither helped me make sense of the diagram you linked to....     But!  I have a rider's manual myself, and can look there, along with my magnifying glass.  

Getting old is not for the faint of heart!

I forgot to add that on pbase, you can enlarge the photo to "original", and it gets quite large.

Unfortunately, most of the connection numbers, and even a few of the wires, got lost in the "translation".

Ok Sorry for this necro post, but I was thinking of wiring my heated handgrips, and electrifying my tank bag to switched power on the bike. I noticed the handy dandy "Special Equipment" connector under the tank, and was wondering how much current this connector can handle? I was going to wire in an additional fuse block so the grips, and accessories would be fused.

I would run a heavy wire from the battery, to a new fuse box, then wire your accessories from there .

The stock wiring  can't handle too much more than it already does .

Whatever switching capability that accessory connector can give you, should be used to switch a relay, which can handle the load of your grips and accessory socket in your tank bag.  That "heavy load" wire should go directly to the battery, or as nearly as possible, with a fuse as close to the battery as possible.
