Different length lower throttle cables?
« on: March 13, 2010, 04:44:18 PM »
Hi All,

Now I am no longer scared of the cable splitter I have to get some new cables. At Motobins and others they just list a lower cable for the 32 mm carb bikes. But on RealOEM they have two different length lower throttle cables; one is 487 mm, the other is 382 mm.

How crucial is this? My throttle cable runs down the left hand side of the frame, I assume the longer one is designed to cross over to the other side? I know one cylinder is slightly ahead but not by that much I would think. Any thoughts guys?

Best to all,
Paul

Munich supplied the longer cable to me and I phoned and told them I needed the short one. They said that they only stock the longer one and that it would work okay.
I fitted it and it does work fine, I would have prefered the short cable for neatness and originality.
I think they supply the Renhill cables, not OME.

I just measured the lower cables that I removed from my '81 R65 about 4 years ago .

One is 19.5 inches (495mm), the other is 18.5 inches (470mm) .

Up till now, I thought they were the same length !!!!!

I measured mine from the center of the swaged fitting that connects to the carb end, to the end of the smaller swaged fitting that goes into the splitter .

Just a thought, I wonder if the high or low handlebars would account for the difference in length .

Here's a little bit of information to remember, if you have a throttle cable fail, you can swap the 'choke' cables to the throttle side, and they will work to get you home .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

The lower throttle cables are a different length due to the fact that the cables are routed down the left side of the center of the frame (at least on my bike) and because the left cylinder and carb are slightly further forward than the right.

There are different length upper cables for the US and Euro (including LS) bars.  I only know because I am getting ready to buy a new set of cables and the odd angle that the cable comes down into my left carb(since it is the same lenght as the one on the right) seems to have put a bit of strain on it, causing it to break at the ferule.  It appears that the lower choke cables are the same length, so go figure.

There are many cable lengths, single cables/splitters/dual cables and all different lengths, I just ordered new cables for mine and I didn't specify US model and got 2 very short cables that would have been used on European clip on bars, European high bar and US low bar are the same length it was very confusing, I made them work with rerouting them but they are very short on my US model.  Pay close attention to how your routed at the steering neck if it's not right the rpm climbs very high when you go from lock to lock.  On the splitter models the single to the throttle grip is a different length for different bar configurations and 1 rear is longer than the other.

My two lower cables are different lengths, too.  I put the longer one on the right carb.
