Got The '84 LS Running Today
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:39:13 PM »
Finally got to put a full day's worth of work on the LS today .

Swapped the battery from the '81 R65, and finally got it started, definitely was 'cranky' after not being run for over 9 years .

Got the carb settings pretty close on the first try .

My Twinmax synchronizer is broke, so I need to construct an oil manometer in the next few days so I can get it set correctly .

The oil pan gasket is leaking, so I need to get one, also the valve cover gaskets were leaking, so I installed an OEM set, seems to have only made the leak worse !!!!!

So I guess a set of rubber gaskets, or a double set of OEM gaskets to solve this problem .

Starter sounds a bit slow, so I need to remove it, and do a thorough cleaning and lubrication on it as well .

The throttle tube, and cam on the handlebar, need replacing, I 'dressed' the teeth with a fine file, but it's obvious they need replacement, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the throttle cables, I'll try a cleaning and lubrication, and see if it improves it, if not then replace them .

Next major undertaking, is to replace all of the seals and gaskets on the final drive, if I have next week end free, that will be my priority next week, I've got all the parts, just need to start on it .

Need to get the front fairing reinstalled, that's the only major visual parts not installed yet .

If I don't suffer any major setbacks, it should be road-worthy in about a month .

Had a great day to work on it, it was 78 F. in the garage this afternoon .

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Great news Bob.

It is always fun playing in the grease pit (or man cave / den / paradise / shed).

How are you going to work out which one to ride when it is up and running too? :o

LOL. Very funny I thought after reading this. I only wish I could have an assortment of bikes like that. One for pretty much any day of the week.
come to think of it, not long after I purchased my '86 r65, I dreamed a lot about owning one of the 'k'-bikes as part of my inventory of Beemers. Not that I have any inventory of beemers other than the r65, but it doesn't hurt to dream.

by the way bob, would you have any pics of your bike as it'd be nice to see it.  :)

It's O.K., Aristotle - I'll say it for you:  I think a K75S is almost as good as a R65!  ;)

+1 on the K75S. That is the first BMW I ever bought and is still my daily rider. It makes a 100 mile daily commute and a once a week 400 mile commute and is smooth as butter on the highway. My R65 is definitely more fun but I wouldn't want to ride it cross country. The K bike did a two day 1000 mile trip to Key West and back after Christmas.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.
