I think manxr65 will be okay without the fans this time of year.
As long as he does not let it run for too long.
Its cold in the UK!
I tend to do one operation at a time, and switch off the engine in between. The key is to take your time.
1. Come in from my warm up ride and switch off engine - 5 mins before I am ready to balance - got to open the garage, connect the guages and get my sh*t in order, etc.
2. Start bike and balance at idle. If I am taking too long - i.e. more that 5 mins running, switch off for 5 mins or after I have completed this task. Go get a cup of tea.
3. Start bike and blip the throttle to ensure both gauges are rising and falling in unison, I rarely leave throttle open more than a couple of seconds - it annoys the neighbours. Balance with cable adjusters. If this operation takes more than 5 mins, take a break for 5 and finish your tea. If all is well, lock down the adjuster nuts. Give it 5 mins and recheck...
Note: You need slack in your throttle cables - the same amount of slack both sides.
4. Get geared up and go for a ride. Hopefully all is well and smooth.
5. If the revs will not drop at idle until you engage the clutch slightly, repeat the exercise after warming the bike up properly this time. If the idle never wants to return, look for air leak, etc, and repeat the exercise.
Soon enough you will be an expert and you will do everthing in 5 mins and never need fans....At least in the UK.
Cheers
